Chicken Curry ( Kerala Style )


Ingredients
  1. Chicken pieces - 500 gms
  2. Onion - 1 (sliced lengthwise )
  3. Tomato - 1/2  (cubed)  
  4. Crushed Ginger - 1 tsp
  5. Crushed Garlic  - 1 tsp
  6. Crushed green chilli - 2 tbsp
  7. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  8. Coriander Powder - 1.5 tbsp
  9. Garam Masala powder - 1/4 tsp
  10. Crushed Pepper powder - 1 tsp
  11. Thick Coconut Milk -  3 tbsp
  12. Curry Leaves
  13. Salt - to taste
  14. Coconut Oil - 3 tbsp
  15. Water - 1/2 cup
  16. Cardamom - 2
  17. Cloves - 2
  18. Cinnamon stick - 1 small piece
  19. Pepper corns - 5 nos

To marinate
  1. Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  2. Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
  3. Pepper powder -1 tsp
  4. Garam masala powder - 1/4 tsp
  5. Crushed Ginger garlic  - 1 tsp
  6. Crushed Green chilli - 1/2 tsp
  7. Salt - to taste
  8. Curry leaves
  9. Vinegar - 1 tsp


Method

  1. Clean and wash chicken pieces well.
  2. Marinate the pieces with ingredients given "To marinate" section and keep for half an hour.
  3. In a pan add coconut oil and splutter whole spices.
  4. Add sliced onions , curry leaves and saute till it gets wilted. 
  5. add crushed ginger , garlic and  green chilli paste and saute till brown.
  6. At this stage add turmeric, coriander , pepper powder  and saute till raw smell disappears.
  7. Add marinated chicken pieces and mix well.. Close lid and cook  for 5 minutes.
  8. Transfer to a pressure cooker and add 1/2 cup water.Cover and cook for 2 whistles.
  9. Once pressure is released, open the lid and mix well.
  10.  Reduce flame and add thick coconut milk.
  11. Sprinkle pepper powder and garam masala .
  12.  Add cubed tomato pieces,fresh curry leaves.
  13. Serve hot with pathiri, palappam, appam, idiyappam or chapathi
