Pacha NendrakayaTholi Parippu Thoran (Raw Plantain Peel Dal Stir Fry)

             



                          

                  Many of you will be familiar with Nendrakaya/Ethakka and its uses.  It is used in ripe or raw  form  for making both sweet and savory dishes. One of the most popular snack made using raw plantain is the Kerala Plantain Chips popularly known as Ethakka Chips in Malayalam. Only the plantain is used and  the peel is usually discarded. But lot of delicious recipes can be made with this plantain peel which has amazing health benefits too. They are rich in dietary fiber and good source of antioxidants. The raw plantain peel are washed and cleaned well and chopped to small cubes. They are cooked and then stir fried with cooked dal and grinded coconut mixture. This dish tastes best when paired with Naadan Kuthari Choru (KeralaRose Matta Rice). So next time if you are making banana chips, don't discard the peel, save them make this delicious and healthy recipe



Ingredients
  • Raw Plantain - 2
  • Green chilli -2
  • Curry Leaves
  • Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli  - 1
  • Coconut Oil- 2 tsp
  • Salt - To taste
  • Cooked Chana Dal  - 1/4 cup
  • Water- 1/4 cup
To Grind (Coarse)
  • Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Pearl Onion-2 nos
  • Jeera (Cumin) -1 pinch
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - 1 pinch

Method
  1. Make long cuts on the peel of the plantain with a pointed knife and remove the peel gently. (this helps in easy peeling)
  2. Place the peeled plantain on a bowl filled with turmeric water for 15 mins.
  3. Wash well in running water and pat dryin a paer towel.
  4. Cut the raw plantain peel into small cubes.
  5. Cook the cubed raw plantain peel with salt, green chilli and turmeric powder adding little water.
  6. In a pan add oil. Splutter mustard seeds, red chilli and curry leaves.
  7. Add cooked raw plantain peel and dal and mix well.
  8. Add grounded coconut mixture and sauté for 2-3 mins.
  9. Sprinkle 1tsp coconut oil and fresh curry leaves on top for extra flavor.
  10. Serve hot with rice.


Notes
  1. Soak in 1/4 tsp turmeric water for 20 minutes to get rid of the stain.
  2. Instead  of dal , you can also use cooked red chori (vanpayar) or green gram dal(cherupayar).
