Chow Chow Koottu (Bangalore Kathirikai Dal Curry)



Ingredients
  • Chow chow (cut into small cubes) - 1 cup
  • Green chilli -2
  • Curry Leaves
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Water - 1/2 cup
  • Salt - To taste
  • Chana Dal- 1/4 cup

To Grind (Coarse)
  • Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Pearl Onion-2 nos
  • Jeera (Cumin) -1 pinch
  • Green Chilly - 1
  • Salt - 1 pinch
To dry roast and temper
  • Red Chilli  - 1
  • Curry Leaves
  • Mustard Seeds- 1tsp
  • Split urad dal - 1tsp
  • Jeera (cumin) - a pinch


Method

  1.  Wash well and Soak Chana dal in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add  soaked chana dal  along with salt, green chilli  turmeric powder and 1 cup water for 4-5 whistles till dal is almost cooked.
  3. Once pressure is released, open the lid and add cubed chow chow.(Add more water and salt if necessary) and again cook for 2 more whistles.
  4. Grind  ingredients given in "To Grind " section to a coarse paste adding little water.
  5. Once dal and  chow chow is cooked gently mash it.
  6. Add grounded coconut mixture and mix well and boil for 3-5 mins.
  7. In a pan add oil. Splutter mustard seeds,red chilli,urad dal , jeera and curry leaves.
  8. Pour over the curry and mix well before serving.
  9. Serve hot with rice.
