Curd Rice (Thayir Sadam)



"Curd Rice" is a popular South Indian  comfort food that is made by mixing cooked rice with thick and less sour curd (yogurt) and tempered with the basic "tadka" such as mustard seeds, split urad dal, curry leaves, freshly chopped ginger and asafoetida .Any variations to this can be made  such as adding  veggies like carrots, green beans or nuts like peanuts and cashews or even fruits like pomegranate or grapes.This dish is mainly served with pappad and pickle.



Ingredients
  • Raw rice - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 2 cup
  • Curd - 1 cup (less sour and thick)
  • Milk- 1/2 cup
  • Salt - as needed




To splutter


  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  • Split Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Ginger - tsp chopped
  • Carrot - 1 tbsp grated
  • Green chilli -2 chopped
  • Red chilli -1
  • Hing - 1 pinch
  • Curry leaves - few


Method
  1. Clean and wash the rice really well and soak for 20 minutes
  2. In a pressure cooker add rice and water and cook till done.
  3. When the rice is cooled, add thick curd and salt and mix well.
  4. You can loosen it by adding milk.
  5. In a heated pan add oil and splutter ingredients given in "to splutter" section and pour over the curd rice.
  6. Mix well and have after 30 minutes
  7. Serve with papapd and pickle.
