Varutharacha Kadala Curry




Ingredients

  1. Black chana (kadala) -3/4 cup
  2. Onion - 1/2  (chopped)
  3. Pearl onion - 5(sliced)
  4. Coriander Powder - 2 tsp
  5. Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  6. Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  7. Green chilli - 2
  8. Garlic - 1 clove
  9. Salt as needed
  10. Coconut flakes - few
  11. Water - as needed


To dry roast and grind

  • Coconut 1/2 cup
  • Red chilli - 2
  • Peppercorns -5
  • Red chilli powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp


To temper

  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dried red chilli - 2
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Garam masala powder -1 pinch


Method

  1. Soak chana with enough water for minimum of 8 hrs(preferably overnight).
  2. Pressure cook soaked chana with ingredients  numbered 2 to 10 adding enough water so as to immerse chana until done.
  3. Meanwhile dry roast coconut with peppercorns and red chilli. Once browned remove from flame and add chilli and coriander powder and grind to fine paste.
  4. Once chana is cooked,open the cooker and add ground coconut mixture.
  5. Temper ingredients given in"to temper" section and pour over the curry.
  6. Serve hot with puttu, appam or chapathi.
